When Delia chose to major in archaeology, she imagined herself as the female Indiana Jones of the Southwest. She didn’t imagine herself crawling through abandoned mine shafts, scrounging for rusty pickaxes and gold pans to sell on auction sites, but Indiana Jones didn’t have to make student loan payments.

Scouring the mountains of Arizona with Simon, her best friend and computer geek extraordinaire, Delia dreams of turning their scavenging enterprise into a legitimate business. More, she longs to earn the respect of peers who shun her for turning into a treasure hunter. What she doesn’t dream of is stumbling across a decapitated body in an old mine near Prescott.

Something dangerous has come to the mountains, and two Harley-riding strangers are the only ones who seem to have a clue. They speak a language Delia has never heard and carry mysterious artifacts she’s never seen. Investigating these strangers might lead her to discoveries that change the face of archaeology forever… or it might lead her and her best friend into a deadly monster’s lair.

To be honest, the story presented was not that interesting. I probably only finished this book, because I have read 2 other series from this author (Emperor's Edge and Dragon Blood).

Neither the story or the characters introduced were interesting enough for me to continue the series.
The team setup of archaeologist+computer geek/genius+ former athlete while seems interesting at the beginning, fails to be interesting because neither one of the characters is interesting enough.

My final though - while I can't recommend this book, as the title states - try the other work of this author.

Torrent Rust Relics Book 1 eBook Lindsay Buroker Reviews

An excellent beginning to a new series from one of my favourite authors.

I enjoy nerdy, awkward characters, and we have an abundance of them here. The skinny Star Trek fan, the would-be Indiana Jones (complete with bullwhip, which turns out to be surprisingly useful), even the tennis star, sidelined by injury, whose awkwardness comes from having focussed so much on her sport that she doesn't know much about anything else. They're young, they're enthusiastic, they're curious to the point of incautious (more or less the Scooby Gang, complete with vanagon, though without any Great Danes), they're short of money, and when the chips are down they're determined and courageous. At least, the narrator, Delia, is. The other two are maybe a little less so, though they show potential.

As a big fan of the author's Emperor's Edge series, I couldn't help noticing similarities. Delia and Amaranthe (the protagonist of EE) both have emergent leadership qualities. The seeming magic in both series is mixed up with seeming aliens (it's not yet clear in this series whether it's really magic or they're really aliens, or both). There are hard-to-kill monsters and underwater caverns.

What's different is that this story is set in our contemporary world and told in first person. It's (broadly speaking) urban fantasy, rather than secondary-world steampunk fantasy. That's one of my personal favourite genres to read, more so than steampunk, if anything, and I thoroughly enjoyed this.

There were a few minor editing issues, but it's an improvement on the EE books in that respect, as well.

Lindsay Buroker is an experienced series author, and she does a good job of setting up some things to be resolved later (to keep us interested in reading the series), while also giving us a complete story with a resolution. She ties the characters together well, gives them clear, strong motivations and distinct personalities, and rubs those personalities together entertainingly.

Other reviewers have mentioned that the characters seem too immature. I remember being not too clueful in my early 20s, so that didn't bother me. I will say that the story as a whole reminded me of a kids' TV series with early-teen protagonists, something like Under the Mountain or a British series with magic and aliens that I watched on a plane a while back exploration, monsters, danger, mysterious powers, and, of course, aliens. For my taste, that's not a problem. I enjoy that sort of story, and don't think it's any the worse for having young adults (or "new adults", if you must) in the place of the kids. Your tastes may differ.

I'm very much looking forward to more in this series, though.
Premise the heroine, named Delia, and her nerdy male partner are in the business of antiquing -- with a twist. They concentrate on relics or archaeological antiques sometimes as well as things like old pepper grinders. They enjoy their business even though they have a lot of trouble making ends meet. When they stumble across a dead body on one of their scavenging adventures, it ends up involving them in a bigger mystery than anything they ever expected -- something finally worthy of the heroine's "Indiana Jones" type aspirations!

While this book felt rougher than Buroker's other novels, I would still consider this author to be one of my favorites. The character interactions weren't standard or predictable--any romance plots in here are going to be slower to develop, I think, although I trust the author to develop them as well as in the Emperor's Edge. There are no superhero protagonists in here who can outthink or outfight all the villains, so that was great. However, the world isn't as richly drawn as Buroker's fantasies, possibly because it was set in contemporary times, and the characters, while a change of pace from the more over the top characters in other Buroker books, seemed flatter. Additional characters added as the book progressed received even less characterization than the 2 main protagonists.

That being said, about halfway through the book, after making the mental switch to the author's contemporary voice, I was definitely on the Rust and Relics train. The protagonists, while it was clear to both them and the reader that they were in way over their heads, acted in pretty believable manners, and their vulnerabilities and weaknesses made the danger components feel even more dangerous.

Recommended for Buroker fans, urban fantasy fans, contemporary fantasy fans, possibly rural fantasy or magic realism fans. I'll definitely keep reading this series.
I'm not sure why I waited so long since discovering Emperor's Edge to read this series (probably because it's only got two main books and I always aaalways want to demand ten more books in Buroker's series. I'm pretty selfish that way considering she's the fastest writer I've known.) While maybe not as exciting right away as some of her other series, she spends time fleshing out the characters and establishing them before just throwing a new one in, and I appreciate that! The lead character is not overdone, but Buroker subtly slips in tidbits to make you remember she's as badass as the next heroine of a different series, although with a whip instead of a talking sword or a motley crew of crazy men following her. Plus she has room to grow and improve, considering most 20 something women wouldn't just automatically be able to kick everyone's butt. I enjoy the Indiana Jones type style and knew at the end Alek was going to be great, even with the 2 pages he's in...okay maybe more like 10. Thank you for once more keeping me up well past when a normal person should sleep with responsibilities the next day.
To be honest, the story presented was not that interesting. I probably only finished this book, because I have read 2 other series from this author (Emperor's Edge and Dragon Blood).
